15 Nov 2013
Swire Pacific Offshore Operations (Pte) Limited (SPO) received the prestigious Achievement of Excellence award, under the Sustainable Business Awards, Large Enterprise category at the Singapore Sustainability Awards 2013.
The award was presented by Mr S. Iswaran, Minister, Prime Minister’s Office, Second Minister for Home Affairs and Second Minister for Trade and Industry to Mr Simon Bennett, General Manager for Sustainable Development of SPO at a Gala Dinner held at Resorts World Sentosa on 31 October 2013 in Singapore. Organised by the Singapore Business Federation (SBF), the Singapore Sustainability Awards recognises the impact made by individual businesses through their tangible, practical actions on the economic, social and environmental aspects of Sustainable Development (SD). The Awards were inaugurated in 2009 with the aim to strengthen Singapore’s position as a global and regional hub for Sustainable Development solutions and the adoption of sustainable business practices.
Nominees of the award went through a stringent round of evaluation in September and SPO impressed the judges with a strong commitment in delivering its promises and diligently going beyond what is required under the legislation to manage the business sustainably. In total, 14 organisations in both the large and small enterprise divisions for both the Sustainability and Green Innovation awards were recognised for their innovative sustainable business practices.
“Swire Pacific Offshore is honoured to receive this award and appreciate the recognition by the Singapore business community. We are committed to run our business sustainably and believe that the long term value creation of our shareholders depends on the sustainable development of our businesses and the communities in which we operate. This award has allowed us to share our best practices and in doing so, we hope to encourage other companies to take actions that will benefit their company, the environment and their key stakeholders,” said Neil Glenn, Managing Director of Swire Pacific Offshore.
Over the years, SPO has proactively spearheaded numerous sustainable development projects. Since January 2011, SPO has voluntarily developed REDD+ carbon offset credits from a forestry project in Paraguay, allowing the company to move towards its goal of climate-neutrality. All the vessels owned by SPO use Marine Gas Oil (MGO), a low sulphur fuel in accordance with ISO 8217 and will use ultra-low sulphur diesel (<0.5%) where available. SPO is also currently sponsoring the Biosphere’s Foundation to undertake a three-year baseline study on cetaceans (especially pigmy blue whales) and other marine mammals, which are suffering mortality through ship strikes in / near the Traffic Separation Scheme off the southern coast of Sri Lanka.
SPO received a commendation award for Singapore Awards for Sustainability Reporting (SASR) organised by ACCA in 2010 and was one of the nine finalists for the same awards in 2011.
