Recruitment scam targeted at seafarers in India

06 Sep 2017

Swire Pacific Offshore Operations (Pte) Ltd (SPO) has been alerted to a scam in Mumbai, India, which purportedly offers interested job applicants, seafarer positions with SPO through an entity named Shiv Sahyadri Offshore Services Private Ltd. Shortlisted applicants are led to believe they have been offered employment with SPO through the issuance of a fraudulent employment contract purportedly signed on behalf of SPO by a representative named “Dave Russell”.

The scam is particularly serious as the victim is made to believe that he had been employed by SPO as a result of the fraudulent employment contract purportedly signed by SPO, and had made substantial advance payments as processing fees to the fraudster(s). Please refer to Appendix A for an extract of the fraudulent employment contract.

SPO takes such scams very seriously and we have lodged an official report with the relevant authorities in India on 6 September 2017. Please note that SPO does not charge any fee to seafarers for recruitment and does not have a relationship with Shiv Sahyadri Offshore Services Private Ltd. In addition, SPO also does not have any employee or representative named “Dave Russell”. The purported “Dave Russell” and Shiv Sahyadri Offshore Services Private Ltd identified in the fraudulent employment contract are not associated with SPO in any way. For general information, please note that SPO currently only recruits seafarers through its related company, Swire Pacific Ship Management Ltd (SPSM).  All job applicants are advised to verify the identity of the agents / recruiters through whom they receive a job offer, and any job applicant who has received offers of employment through other agents / recruiters are strongly advised to verify such offers with SPSM directly at the following email address

Should you receive a suspicious-looking message or employment contract similar to the above or purporting to be from SPO’s Human Resource or recruitment department, or from Swire Pacific Ship Management, please alert us at
